Frigatebirds are found in the subtropics – Fiji and other Pacific islands – and are extremely rare in NZ waters. A juvenile Lesser Frigatebird was found on Muriwai Beach, exhausted and very underweight. We suspect it was brought south by Cyclone Gita.
With the assistance of DOC and Auckland Museum staff, our vet Berend weighed the bird and took blood samples to ensure it is disease free. While it is still underweight, it has gained almost 400g since it’s arrival and we are hopeful of a successful release when it has gained more weight and strength.
Please note this bird is in isolation and we are not permitting visitors. Thank you.
Check out the digital encyclopeadia of New Zealand birds http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/lesser-frigatebird for more information about the Lesser Frigatebird.
